The United States, Japan and France are prodding their companies to rely less on China to make the world’s smartphones, drugs and other products. But even after the coronavirus derailed trade, few want to leave China’s skilled workforce andefficient suppliers of raw materials to move to other countriesDisruptions from the pandemic, on top of the U.S. -Chinese tariffwar, fueled warnings that relying too much on China leaves global companies vulnerable to costly breakdowns in the event of disasters or political conflict.Drug makers stand out as one industry that is trying to reduce reliance on Chinese suppliers by setting up sources of rawmaterials in the United States and Europe But consumer electronics, medical devices and other industries are sticking with China.”I don’t know of a single company right now that is moving ahead with any plans to move, said Harley Seyedin, president of the American Chamber of Commerce in South China的行China’s explosive rise as the world’s low-cost factory helped to hold down consumer prices and boosted Western corporate profits. But it has fueled political tension over lost American and European blue collar jobs. Governments and industryconsultants fret that dependence on China can be a threat to supply chains and possibly national security.Chinese factories assemble most of the world’s smartphones and consumer electronics and growing share of medical equipment, industrial robots and other high-tech goods. This country is a dominant supplier of vitamin C and ingredients forantibiotics and other medicines. The ruling Communist Party has spent two decades building ports, railways, telecom networksand other facilities that are regarded as among the world’s best.”China still offers an unparalleled supply chain for any industry,”said Jit Lim of Alvarez Marsal, a management ponsulting firm.Philip Richardson, who man ufactures loudspeakers in Panyu, near Hong Kong, said he has looked at Vietnam and other countries. But he said while their wages might be as low as 60% of China’s, the savings will be eaten up by the cost of givingup his network of Chinese suppliers.”We gave it consideration for about a minute, and it doesn’t make sense, said Richardson, who has worked in China for22 years. “When you buy magnets, now you have to pay for transportation and customs duties into other countries, whereasin China we just buy the magnets and they are shipping to us.”President Donald Trump took office i217 promising tobring back our.”The next years’ tariff hikes on goods from China in a fight over technology and trade prompted some exporters to shift production. But changes were small. Most went to other developing countries. The pandemic has raised political pressure for companies to move.

The Japanese government, which sees China as a strategic rival, is offering 220 billion yen ($2 billion) to companies that move production to Japan in a virus aid package announced in April. It offers 23.5 billion yen ($220 million) for Japanese companies in China to move to other countriesThe tariff war prompted concern about China’s dominance as a supplier of active pharmaceutical ingredients, or APIs, used in antibiotics and vitamins. Some American commentators warned Beijing might retaliate by withholding APIs, though was there no sign that happened.”There will be an increase in the repatriation of national drug supply chains and the re-establishment of national strategic manufacturing capabilities for key drugs,”Sakshi Sikka, who follows the industry for Fitch Solutions, said in an email. In May, the U.S. government awarded a contract worth up to $812 million over years to Phlow Corp., a Virginia companyset up to insure against drug shortages by producing ingredien ts and generics. In Europe, French drugmaker Sanofi SA is setting up an API supplier to reduce reliance on China. Sanofi says the companywill be the No. global producer, with annual sales of billion euros by 2022.India and Indonesia have announced plans to increase their own production of pharmaceutical raw materials. Those changes are politically driven and will push up costs, while China’s dominance as a global supplier is unlikely tochange in the near future, according to Fitch’s SikkaCompanies including Nike Inc. that used to make shoes, furniture, clothes and other low-margin goods in China have been migrating for a decade to Southeast Asia, Africa and other economies in search of cheaper labor. For higher-end shoes, however, U.S. import duties would have to rise even further before sites such as Ethiopia or Southeast Asia can compete with experienced Chinese workers and flexible suppliers, said Robert Gwynne, who produces women’s shoes for brands including Steve Madden in Dongguan, near Hong Kong”All my clients say, we have to diversify,” said Gwynne. But when shown costs in other countries, “90% take the China”scenario.

Companies also increasingly are tied to China by the appeal of its 1.3 billion consumers at a time when the West’s spending growth is anemic.Makers of automobiles and higher-value goods are spending billions of dollars to expand Chinese production. As the economy reopened, Volkswagen AG said in May it would spend 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion)to buy control of its Chinese electricvehicle venture and a controlling stake in a battery producer.Instead of using China to export, “now a lot of people are producing local for local, “said Lim.Only 11% of companies that responded to a survey by the European unx Chamber of Commerce in China said they were”considering shifting investment to other countries,” down from15% last yearSome are leaving to cut labor costs, but the rest”are really committed to China,” said a chamber vice president, Charlotte Roule.Moving factories or finding non-Chinese suppliers to reduce the risk of disruption”means further investment, “RoulesaidWho is going to pay for thatCharles M. Hubbs, founder of Premier Guard, which makes surgical gowns masks and other medical devices in China, said heis gearing up to produce face masks in Mississippi to avoid problems with shipping But he said such an approach won’twork once the pandemic ends and prices fall back to normal.”You can afford it now. People are paying $12 for an isolation gown, said Hubbs, who has worked in China since the late1980s. “But when COVID is over you’re going to go back to $3 or $4.”Many companies already have pursued a “China plus one” strategy in Asia over the past decade. They set up factories inSoutheast Asia to serve other markets or insure against disruption in China even if that raised their costs. But as China lifted anti-disease controls on business in March, other Asian economies shut down, forcing companies to shift work back to Chinese factories, which are working overtime to make up the shortfall, said Seyedin. Some U.S. and other leaders are talking about possible tax breaks or other incentives to lure companies home. Trump has threatened to raise taxes on American companies that move from China to any other country but the U nited States.Even if tax breaks or subsidies go ahead, com panies face the costs of setting upa factory in unfamiliar territory, training rookie employees, finding suppliers and possible disruption to customer relations, said Alvarez Marsal’s Lim.”Shifting is not free,” he said.

Companies have only one thing in mind, profits. It has no nationalistic agenda unless it it articially put in placed. Democracy and free market advocates would have you believe that it is only right for markets to be left to decide for what isright or wrong. But they are largely wrong. Blind pursuit of profits is wrong. Western companies are driven by the need to seek profits regardless of social and environmental cost. They think only about profits Last thing we need is to creditthem for seeking profits even though politics criticises them for doing so.

Especially its supply chain, nothing compares. Which country has the infrastructure, work force and capacity necessary to

set up shop, produce goods AND ship them to wherever in whatever quantity? Motherfucking China that’s who. I do believe that western companies and governments would jump at the chance to leave China to leave elsewhere, but they will alwaysruninto problems in either capacity, infrastructure or just an inadequate work force that won’t ensure quality of the products and services they provide like we do. Vietnam has com parable population in terms of education and infrastructure, but they are “just” a country of 1o0 million people (vietnam is fucking huge by all metrics, but it STILL pales in comparison to their big brother up north). They can only meet the world’s demand to such an extent with the existing means theyhave before they get so far. SEA? Good luck having try to ship everything between either multiple islands or rugged backcountry. The only country that has some potential here is India. They have the territory and population to facilitate beingthe world’s next factory. Only their infrastructure and even basic education of a lot of their people are still decades behind, but those are things that can be changed and developed, albeit over multiple decades. Both India and China should count themselves blessed with being located in such geographical strategic locations, with the natural geographic featuresthey have… And there is A SHITLOAD of money that can be made here, as long as business doesn’t interrupted by somethinglike… Lets say a war.

We all know who would benefit the most from a conflict between the world’s largest economy and world’s what-could-potentially-be the largest economy. Whoever becomes the largest, they don’t like either of us to be more well-off than they are.

As for those you hear shouting for their countries to shift trade away from China and use countries such as India, Indonesia and Vietnam etc as manufacturing replacements instead, what they fail to comprehend is that it took China 42 YeARS todevelop their manufacturing industries in to what they are now, and to believe that other much smaller and less developed economies will have the immediate capacity to replicate what China has taken decades to achieve is completely laughable. letalone satisfy the west RIGHT NOW which is what they want.Building a SIN GLE mass production factory would take years of planning and construction, let alone trying to replicate China’s entire manufacturing base which probably has tens of thousands of factories. Then there’s the training of non skilled workers, skilled workers, managers, supervisors ete to run a factory which can take another several years. Your country would then also need to build a massive transportation and logistical framework to actually process and ship all those goods to the west. That means reliable highways, ports, airports, shipping vessels, aircraft, transportation workers etc. Howmuch money would one of these non China governments need to pay for all this? Then you need a strong legal and financial system to actually make international transactions possible and reliable. How many years would it take to write all these Iaws and then try and pass them through the legal and parliamentary system? These are only a handful of the hundreds of potential variables that need to be considered for a country who wants to replace China’ in manufacturing. It took China morethan 40 years to set all this infrastructure up and allow the system to develop and mature. How long would it take othercountries?

What was tim apple saying before?”The products we do require advanced tooling. In the United States, I am not sure our tooling engineers can fill aroom. In China, you can fill multiple football fields,”This ain’t even a matter of”quantity has quality all of it’s own”, China’s top unis for mech engineering ain’t sloucheWould say the above stands for pretty much every single field. Hell, only reason the yanks are still on top with AI is because really intelligent but really fucking stupid Chinese people go overseas to work. What a disgusting disgraceBuild the wall.

Lol walls don’t work. You just need to make China more enticing than the US, which both China and the US are doing.

Always cracks me up when I see liberals talking about, “We need to stop relying on goods from China wah wahwah. “I’m justlike, soooo, are you ready for socialism then Because that’s the only way to stop capitalists from deciding where yourconsumer goods get produced. Also it would take years of reorganizing society before we could make all our own stuff againin the US. These fools have no idea how the world works.

Or even better, the ones who shout to “just”move their factories or production to some poor af country, they could”just”produce the same goods, right? mean that’s how this capitalism thing works, right?I am paying for it, so I have all the POWAH! Doesn’t matter if I put this factory in the middle of some sandbox, there will probably be people out there whowill assemble my $1400 Macbook for a few cents, no? That’ll teach China! Just move EVERYTHING to India, Africa or just some fucking desert. We will get our laptops and shizz from there, from now on!

I’m convinced that global human civilization faces collapse during this century (the argument was developed by https: //en.wikipedia. org/wiki/The_Limits_to_Growth in 1972 based on peak resource extraction)unless China can save humanity in timewith some combination of fusion energy, materials science, and digital consumer technology. Given how strong China’s enemies are, I’m not holding my breath and am making investments in natural resources.

I agree that suburbs are environmentally a big problem, but newer construction techniques, including well-insulated wallsand windows, can mitigate some of this, and good road design can also minimise the traffic problem. The issue here is that there are many Chinese professionals currently willing to move to other countries so that they canhave detached, single-family homes and own multiple cars -so they’re going to have these when they move to another country anyways. It’s preferable to keep them in China. The environmental impact will be lessened by keeping them in China because the government can enforce more efficient construction standards for detached single-family homes.

Of course they don’t. They outsourced to China in the first place because those very same companies didn’t want to pay totrain future staff. Why would those companies want to move to another country to pay and train staff??

lost man wants_soda

For more money. If cost of retraining is less than pay difference than it makes sense to retrainCompanies won’t leave if they lose an economic advantage by leaving China. Generally that advantage is speed and ease ofbusiness.More and more that advantage is innovation, where believe China wants to be.

The pioneer of the next industrial revolution and becoming an advanced economy.

reminds me of a former comment from a sino comrade (it was so good I had to save it):The ‘Boycott China’ campaign right now has become completely hysterical and extremely feverish amongst the masses in thewest and many other countries. These completely ignorant people somehow believe that by boycotting the Chinese products they see in their stores they will be hurting’ the Chinese government and ‘sticking it to the CCP’, when in fact almost allthe made in China products they see have no connection to the Chinese government whatsoever. Even if a ‘boycott China’campaign succeeded,it’ s main impact wouldnt’ be on the Chinese government,it’ s main blow would be to Chinese businesses and employees who have no political or financial connection to the Chinese government. This is further proof that the nonsense moniker ‘we don’t hate the Chinese people, only the Chinese government’is complete and utter bullshit. It has always been about sinophobia and veiled racism as they aim to collectively punish all Chinaand all Chinese people as a whole.take for example the completely idiotic decision by the UK government to backtrack on the Huawei 5G deal, ‘in order to punish the Chinese government for covering up the virus and allowing it to spread.’Wel Huawei is NOT owned by the Chinese government, how is banning them going to hurt the Chinese government? This line of reasoning makes no sense. The moreplausible explanation is that the UK government is simply gripped by racist sinophobia and wants to attack anything Chinese.

The main reasons that professionals leave China areWages are still too low for the long working hours that are demanded of professionals. Working hours must be limited below 50 per week. 9-9-6 must be abolished. What’s the point of making a lot of money if your employer doesn’t give you any free time to enjoy any of it?Housing fit for professionals is lackluster for the price, compared to offerings for the same level of salary in foreigncountries. 500,000 CHF buys you a very decent house within commuting distance of major cities in Europe, Australia, Canadaor the USA. 500,000 CHF buys you a crappy apartment in China’s major citiesChina needs more suburbs with detached homes.

overbeb

Your conclusion of building suburbs is absolutely the wrong one. Suburbs of single family homes are terribly inefficientand cause all kinds of environmental/ecological harms. They also make mass transportation much harder leading to more automobile usage which also causes environmental damage.
