The entire animal rights (AR) movement is a societal disease that most Western countries developed after they’d amassed enough wealth through the systematic despoilment of the rest of humanity.
Since eggs have become cheap and abundant, idle, rich Westerners start fantasizing about coddling chickens the way they coddle their pets. Since meat is cheap and abundant, they start yapping about how immoral it is to eat it. It’s the symptom of a decaying culture built on easy access to wealth.

This is why the AR movement was unheard of during times of hardship and deprivation (WWII, the Great Depression, etc.). Animal rights advocacy used to be the exclusive domain of the idle women of the aristocracy/high bourgeoisie; now that a lot more people in the West are financially comfortable, they are so shocked that others don’t behave the way they do, and they start pointing fingers at countries outside the West. In this case, China.
The Chinese should thank their lucky stars that their own society has been largely immune to this AR depravity.

动物权利运动在艰难贫困时期闻所未闻（如二战、大萧条时期等）。动物权利倡导，是那些无所事事的上层阶级或贵妇们的专属领域。现在西方越来越多的人经济上过得舒服，开始震惊其他人为什么不按照他们的方式行事。他们开始指责西方以外的国家。这种情况下，就是中国了。

Human rights have priority over animal rights
I’m a moderate animal rights supporter myself, but humans are more important than animals. This is not just a moral argument; only when humans become wealthy can they afford to care of animals. A system where animal rights are prioritized over human rights is unsustainable.
Animal rights are an idealistic luxury in wealthy societies where human rights are the norm. In poor societies with insecure human rights, neglecting animal rights is cruel but practical sacrifice. I believe that when China becomes a wealthy country, its animal rights will be significantly improved.
人权高于动物权利。
我是温和的动物权益保护者，但人类权益比动物的权益更重要。不仅是个道德上的争议；只有当人类变得富裕，他们才有能力关心动物。一个动物权利凌驾于人权之上的体制是不可持续的。

Really? At least Chinese don’t kill for joy anymore. That’s much better than those fishermen who catch a fish, give it a kiss, then throw it back to water. Oh, just a hook through the mouth does not hurt much? Than try it yourself!
