3 hours to the north of Ha Long lies a city called Mong Cai – a border city that is separated from China only by a river less than 500m across. This border is super strange, and really highlights the differences between China and Vietnam. On one side – the Vietnam side – people have access to the internet, including things such as Youtube and Facebook and Google, while just across the river, the majority of people don’t even know what Youtube is. And yet they can see each other going about their daily lives. Having lived in Vietnam for the last 2.5 years, as well as studied and lived in China for almost 2 years, I know what life is like from both sides of the border, and this place truly gave me a somewhat surreal feeling as I recalled and compared my life on either side. I’ve lived 10 years in Macau and it’s exactly like this. Even tough it’s part of China, it will still be a special administrative region for a few more years, so the whole place is surrounded by water just a few meters away to mainland China. It’s kinda weird.

When I lived in China I did a big trip around the country. Picked a ton of random locations just to see what was there. I ended up at a tiny spot on the North Korean border called 图们，it was similarly surreal, and had a river acting as a border too. Couldn’t see many people but I saw a lot of dilapidated buildings and a few guards standing on the bridge.
