France may join forces with Russia and China to build a research station on the Moon, the Russian space agency Roscosmos suggested on Tuesday. The proposal came during a videoconference between Dmitry Rogozi, Roscosmos’ director general, and Philippe Baptiste, chair of France’s National Centre for Space Studies.

A press statement from Roscosmos said that during the talks, the two “discussed the prospects for Russian-French cooperation in the Guiana Space Centre Soyuz complex, and touched on possible French participation in the Russian–Chinese initiative to create the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS).”

Both sides agreed to begin “a detailed discussion” on further steps. Roscosmos and the China National Space Administration (CNSA) said the project would be “open to all interested countries and international partners”, although the US would not be able to participate owing to a law it passed in 2011 prohibiting cooperation between Nasa and China.

The US is working on its own moon programme with Nasa’s Artemis and Gateway projects.

If all goes according to plan, Artemis will send astronauts to the lunar surface in the mid-2020s and establish a long-term human presence on and around the moon by the end of the decade. Gateway, which is part of Artemis, would build a space station in lunar orbit.

While I’m not disagreeing (even though I live in France), I will always be in favor to isolate the US.The younger generations in Europe are open to socialism more and more and these sorts of projects together could help us lean towards socialism.

I don’t think this is good news. The risk of industrial espionage by the french is great. They are years behind China in terms of research and technology, China has nothing to gain from a joint venture.

Exactly, it is more of a move to isolate the US internationally; we can build a hyper modern space station on the moon that is open to everyone (perhaps maybe Americans) where we can share crucial knowledge with especially the most underdeveloped countries
