Even with the ban, I just don’t see the police forcibly shutting down all dog meat restaurants in the country. That sort of thing just doesn’t happen in Korea. Also, restaurants would just import dog meat from China and Southeast Asia (which is going to be even more sketchy than locally produced products).

Porn is illegal but prostitution is easy to find in Korea. I think that s what he means. Enforcing it is different from legislation.

No they really are not popular anymore, at least not in Seoul. They’re not even close to being popular, and it’s not just young people under 30. Here’s an article from last year that talks about how many of them have closed down or switched menus.

I was trying to refute this:

Dog meat isn’t that prevalent. There is little possibility that you’d encounter a restaurant that serves dog meat unless you visit a countryside.

That implies it’s rare which is wildly misleading. There are probably more dog meat restaurants per capita in Korea than almost any other country on earth, so by global standards it is very popular in Korea. To put it another way, there are certainly more dog meat restaurants than Mc Donald’s Restaurants here.

I don’t dispute it’s a dying business mostly catering to grandparents.

My issue is fake or misleading narratives. Mamy ounger Koreans, seem so embarrassed by it, they have misleading debates.

tommy-b-goode

Yeah it also says there’s a specific type of dog raised for meat.. Sure people aren’t eating their own pets they may be wrong that there are “dogs raised for this purpose”. This is what I had assumed when I moved to Korea. I’ve seen dog farms and trucks carrying dogs. There’s all kinds of random breeds in there. I don’t know how prevalent the random breeds farms are, but enough that I’ve seen them.

Also he says you need to leave the city to find dog meat. I live in 안양시 and there’s a market next to my house with 4 or 5 dog meat stalls and I walk past it every day, it’s kept in full view in freezers or just sitting on a bowl of ice.

Phocion-

I personally know a Korean man who doesn’t want a pet dog for his family because when he was a kid his mother cooked their pet dog for his sick grandfather and it upset him.

In the past, when meat was scarcer than today, the nutrients in the dog meat could be very healthful for poorer Koreans with poor diets. Nowadays it is easy to just grab a hamburger, but it wasn’t always so.

jakobdorof

the history is something i’d like to look into more sometime. i’ve had (younger, dog-loving) koreans tell me that consumption originated during the difficult post-war famine years in the ’50s, as a kind of sad necessity. of course, that’s not true – it has a history going back millennia on the peninsula – but i’d like to learn more about where it was at right before occupation years, right before the north-south divide, etc., to get a sense for how those difficult circumstances did or didn’t affect dog meat’s place in korean society.

ProVagrant

Thinking objectively, I find these bans entirely irrational. I don’t understand how eating a dog is inhumane, but a chicken, cow, or octopus is perfectly ok.

If they are raised for consumption, slaughtered just like other food, and safe to eat if properly prepared, then what is the issue?

MOSSCHARGER305

That’s the thing, they’re not slaughtered like any other food. They are beaten while alive as it is believed to tenderize the meat and bring out the flavor.

MultiplicativeCarrot

Then doesn’t it make more sense to legally require the humane slaughter of livestock than banning of specific kinds of meats?

MOSSCHARGER305

Yes it does, but let’s not pretend Korea is good about enforcing any kind of regulations.

Phocion-

The way to make the slaughter more humane is to legalize and regulate it, but the animal rights activists aren’t interested in that.

Marijuana_Guy

But it’s okay to slaughter and eat other animals because the president doesn’t love them.

Tmazesx

TIL (actually a few months ago) that an estimated 3% of Swiss eat cats and dogs, especially during Christmas

But we hardly hear about this. I wonder why.

You’re a disgusting dog meat eater. Go to hell

galvanickorea

I dont even know why theres a debate on this, I dont eat dogs and never will but how different is it from eating cows or chicken or fish lol?? Only reason its looked down on is because societally dogs have been considered as something more than just a wild animal so it might look like we’re eating our pets we grew up with.. other than purely sentimental/emotional outbursts i see no reason for this to even be an issue. By the same logic cows are sacred in India so there should be outrage over that lol
